Gender Identity and Children

June 11, 2018

What we mean by gender?Parents often confuse terms like gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation. Gender identity is who you know yourself to be. Gender expression is how you express your gender to others. Sexual orientation refers to the gender of the people to whom you are typically sexually attracted to.

How does gender identity develop?

Gender development is often associated with puberty and adolescence, but children begin showing interest in their gender identity early in life. Although every child is unique and may develop at a different pace, most children have a strong sense of their gender identity by the time they are four years old.
