CFPNA President Message - Summer

June 28, 2018

Hello Family Practice/Primary Care Nurses of Canada,

It was my absolute pleasure to be able to represent you at the Canadian Nurses Association Biennial Convention June 18-20.  As the Family Practice Nurses representative on the Canadian Network of Nursing Specialties I was able to attend as a voting delegate and take part in  in the voting process.  It was very exciting to be on the floor when CNA voted in favour of expanding its membership to included licensed practical nurses (known as registered practical nurses in Ontario) and registered psychiatric nurses.  This decision will enable greater collaboration and unity among all nurses across Canada.  This will be a long process with lots of consultation with nurses so watch the CNA website for more information and to have your voice heard.

I was also able to spend some time with the Community Health Nurses of Canada.  This was very helpful as we spent some time discussing the problems we have in common such as waning membership numbers, challenges with national conference attendance, and supporting the workload that executive members have to support a viable nursing specialty organization.  Suffice to say these are complex problems that we did not solve but have committed to working on together.  Additionally, we are at the table with CHNC as they review their certification exam questions to ensure the voice of Family Practice / Primary Care nurses is visible in the next rendition of this exam.  Our ongoing work on the family practice nursing competencies is supporting this work.

Your new executive have been very busy with approving a more robust financial policy, approving a small revenue stream related to posting jobs on our website and ensuring we have representation at the Atlantic region conference happening in Nova Scotia this fall.  We have updated our website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (without a public relations executive member).  So with that I would like to put the call out for a public relations representative; it would be great to have a member with a love for social media!  Please email me at should you wish further information regarding this exciting position.

We are working on some exciting projects in the background so stay tuned for our next update.
